Popular martial arts

Some of the popular martial arts are:
1.Judo – is an Olympic sport. Judo is similar to wrestling and theĀ  opponents try to throw each other down, there are no punches or kicks

2. Karate – originated from Okinawa,Japan. It focuses on strikes using kicks and hand strikes and training involves hardening the entire body. Some of the different types of Karate are Shotokan, Gen-wa-ki, Kempo, Kenpo, Kyokoshin, Goju, Isshin-Ryu.

3. Taekwondo – developed in Korea and is an Olympic sport. This sport is used by the Korean police and military for self defense. It is similar to Karate, but more complex with emphasis on kicks. There is a lot of emphasis on power in Taekwondo. Moo Du Kwan and Han Mu Kwan are some of the different types of Taekwondo . There is a global governing body for Taekwondo that ensures that the same standards are maintained worldwide.

4. Jiujitsu – also of Japanese origin. This martial art has throws, take downs and submissions

5. Krav Maga – more of a self defense technique developed in Israel

6. Kick boxing – boxing with some kicks. Muay Thai originates from Thailand
