The top show in Wales

To an ignorant Englishman it could be one of those long an unpronouncable words that have little or no meaning. For the initiated – the Welsh themselves – the word ‘Eisteddfod’ is synonimous with the identity of the nation. The word is ‘Eisteddfod’ is derived from the Welsh word ‘Eistedd’, which means ‘to sit’- setting the scene perfectly for a festival of this nature.

The National Eisteddfod of Wales is a major international festival, allowing visitors be part of a large gathering celebrating the country’s rich culture. The festival has a long history dating back to the 12th century, and qualifies as being on of the best things to do whilst visiting Wales. It is very important for Wales as a nation, because of its promotion of the language and the arts.

What impressed me about the festival, was the huge variety of performers on offer alongside the ceremonies, competitions and concerts. It isn’t just about classical or traditional types of singing, but encompasses lots of different styles like hip-hop, folk and rock music.
